This is where I talk about lolita.
The sad thing, I think, is that all creativity is gone from the lolita scene. Back in the day (*grandpa*) everyone was creative, we were kinda forced to be, because nothing was available and what was available was hella expensive. Even if it resulted in abominations like furry lolita legwarmers, everyone was creatively thinking about how to build an outfit.

Nowadays, everyone buys brand, and is expected to do so. If you can't afford it, there's brands that make exact replica's of brands. And brands that make replicas of replica brand items. We all look like perfect copies of the GLB models (except for some's greasy hair?), wearing the newest brand items in the way brand intended it.

Basically, I think part of the problem is, lolita fashion is fairly limited and extremely formulaic. There are only a few skirt shapes, or sleeve shapes, and there are about four main colours. Actually, sometimes I feel I'm buying the same item over and over. Even the great, new First Ever American Non-Replica Lolita Brand came out with...a cupcake skirt in blackxwhite :(

And if you do something creative, you will just be put into the next box. Deco-loli, otome-kei, pink rose, natural-kei...You're not just being creative with your lolita clothes, you're in an entirely different box by itself. Like, there can be no variations without it needing a definition, label, and separate lj community.

But: I'm glad to say all lolitas on my list are super beautiful & creative, & even though it has its flaws, I still loooooove the lolita movement ('movement' -> we might need a Manifesto soon)

The loli rules can kiss my ass, I rather do my thing than look like the next copy of a GLBible model :)

The only thing holding us back from returning to that creativity is the peer pressure. We just need to have the guts to say: you know what EGL community: screw you, I WANT to wear that oversized frock coat with my pirate loli outfit. Or: screw you, I _am_ going to wear THAT tailcoat with THAT outfit. Or hell why not: I AM going to make a dress out of _that_ print :)

Yes, you're completely right. Before, I have always been scared of not 'being' a lolita any more when I'd be too creative with it, but I guess it doesn't matter so much :) This year, I want to try out things that are different, we'll see :)

I think it goes this way for _all_ subcultures, if people inside them don't push the limit then they stagnate and become dull and grey.
It's the same with Gothic too, it started out with dull velvety horror movie dracula garb, and look at how many things you can get away with there now, and new things keep on joining in all the time.
It's not what others think about it, it's what _you_ think about it. If you decided that a Tigerprint JSK is lolita and wear it like that, then let's face it, it is.
That's probably how _all_ lolita substyles started.
And if people give you grief, you can just say: I'm a designer, I have as much right as every other Japanese designer to do eclectic things with the fashion (that's what I do).

I totally agree with you, especially on the brandwh*ing thing. I just wear what I like, regardless of what people think. And when I see a brand item that I like (and can squirm into) I'll think about buying it, but I'll never be one of those people who only wears stuff 'from (fill in brand name)' and 'like (fill in brand name) intended it'.

What I like about fashion or (probably more accurate) clothing is that you can do your own thing. Be creative! It's much more fun to see people (for lack of a better term) doing their own thing than looking like clones.

But as hildekitten says, it's the same with most styles and not limited to subcultures. Mainstream fashion usually is equally uninspired. They just copy something from someone that actually has a fashion sense.
We should just bring back the fun in lolita :p. Hurray for being creative! The so-called rules should only be used as a guideline (if they are used at all) and as far as the rest goes, we should just do what feels right. But to be fair and honest, I should add that I don't really care about fitting in the lolita-box or not... I just like wearing the clothes I wear no matter what category they fit in.

Haha, I have to disagree. Near the end of the year last year everyone was trying strange coordinates. Matching red headbows to green outfits when there's nothing red in the outfit. I think the movement to be unique is still going strong. The thing is creativity is no longer solely the designer's job. It's all about styling these days. Even Maki said it's all the rage in Japan to mod brand clothes, which sounds like total sacrilege to us doesn't it? XD
